Packing Tips



Packing well before move-in can help prevent damage, save space, and make unpacking easier later. Use sturdy materials, protect fragile items, and label everything clearly so your storage unit stays organized from the start.

• Use Strong Boxes: Choose boxes that are sturdy enough to hold their shape during moving and stacking. Weak or damaged boxes can collapse under weight and make it harder to keep your unit organized.

• Keep Heavy Items in Small Boxes: Books, dishes, tools, and other heavy belongings should go in smaller boxes. This makes them easier to lift and helps prevent the bottom of the box from breaking.

• Wrap Fragile Items Separately: Dishes, glassware, lamps, mirrors, and decor should be wrapped one item at a time. Add padding around the top, bottom, and sides of each box so items do not shift during transport.

• Label Boxes on More Than One Side: Label each box with the room, general contents, and any fragile notes. Marking more than one side makes boxes easier to identify after they are stacked in the unit.

• Clean and Dry Items Before Packing: Appliances, kitchen items, outdoor gear, and furniture should be clean and dry before storage. Moisture, food residue, and dirt can lead to odors, stains, or mildew over time.

• Protect Furniture Before Moving: Cover furniture with sheets, moving blankets, or furniture covers before placing it in storage. This helps reduce scratches, dust, and scuffs while items are being moved and stored.

• Keep Important Items Near the Front: Place items you may need sooner near the entrance of the unit. Seasonal boxes, tools, documents, and frequently used belongings are easier to reach when they are not buried behind furniture.

• Leave a Small Walkway: If you plan to access your unit during the rental period, leave a narrow path through the space. This gives you a better chance of reaching boxes and furniture stored toward the back.

• Stack Boxes by Weight: Place heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top. This helps keep stacks stable and prevents fragile or lightweight boxes from being crushed.

• Use Vertical Space Carefully: Shelving, tall furniture, and stacked boxes can help you use the height of the unit. Keep heavy items low and make sure anything stored upright is secure.

• Keep Similar Items Together: Store related items in the same area so they are easier to find later. For example, keep holiday decor, kitchen items, office supplies, and clothing grouped in separate sections.

• Make a Quick Inventory: Keep a simple list of what you place in storage and where important items are located. A note on your phone can save time when you need to find something later.
